Need advice on Telus vs Rogers for mobility network in Edmonton.

2020.10.23 05:28 Mathcmput Need advice on Telus vs Rogers for mobility network in Edmonton.

I’m currently with Telus and have been with Koodo before that for like 7 years. So I’m mostly familiar with the Bell/Telus network only, not so much Rogers.
I’m paying $65 for 10GB “unlimited” with Telus, it was offered to me as a migration plan from Koodo. Noticed my workplace has access to the corporate EPP plans on Rogers and Telus.
Telus wants a $50 migration fee for converting from consumer to EPP. The Telus EPP call centre is closed for the day as they’re only until 5pm Eastern Time. I’m not sure if they also charge a $40 activation fee on top of the migration fee.
I called the Rogers sales line to enquire about the activation fee. They told me they can waive the $40 activation fee as long as it’s a BYOD plan, and not a device financing plan.
So far Rogers seems like the better deal for the same kind of plan offered. My only concern would be potentially slower speeds and weaker signal coverage.
I was always told by people online that Bell/Telus have the best network, but I’m starting to think that’s not really the case. I live down in Heritage Valley, which is southwest Edmonton. Rogers and Freedom both added new cell towers in Chappelle and Allard last year. Telus still haven’t added new towers anywhere in that area to this date. At home my Telus signal is fine, but Heritage Valley Town Centre and Allard gets a little bit tricky. I used to get no service inside Superstore until December last year. I do notice that in the central areas of Edmonton, Telus has more cell towers than Rogers. In some areas, Telus has small cells literally every block. I do know that Rogers 5G has a wider coverage area and some Edmontonians told me they have a batter experience on Rogers
I move around Southwest Edmonton mostly. Southgate, Heritage Valley, South Edmonton Common, Century Park, Windermere, Calgary Trail South, and University of Alberta area are some of my most frequented areas in Edmonton.
Does anyone in Edmonton have anecdotes or experiences comparing the Rogers and Bell/Telus networks? Should I go for the better deal or the better network?

Statements by Dr Hinshaw
Clarification
  • Often asked if parents of child with illness, but not positively tested for Covid-19 yet, need to isolate?
  • No, unless they are Covid-19 positive or close contact of a Covid-19 case
  • Child must be isolated from others at home
  • For young children, it may be best to have one parent provide all care
Schools
  • Students/Staff at 55 schools with alerts (1+ active cases) are off list
  • 1+ cases in 170 schools (~7%) with 370 active cases
  • 72 schools are on outbreak (2+) with 14 on watch list (5+)
  • In-school transmission has likely occurred in 27 schools, 21 with 1 case
Foothills
  • 2 deaths today are at the hospital centre
  • 83 cases (42 patients) linked to the centre
  • 2300+ tests conducted because of AHS' aggressive measures
Misericordia Hospital
  • 10 cases in 2 units
  • Widespread testing underway
  • Outbreak protocols being implemented
  • Visitation to affected units is limited, but rest of the hospital is safe
Voluntary Public Health Measure in Edmonton/Capital Region
  • The sharp rise in Edmonton is concerning
  • Past week has raised positive rate to 4% with a reproductive value has gone from 1 to 1.3
  • All parts of Edmonton Zone are being impacted
  • 36% cases exposed by close contact, 26% linked to outbreak
  • In cases of known transmission, household/community contacts are key driver
  • Social, family events continue to be a factor. Several workplace outbreaks have occurred
  • "Edmonton zone now faces a crucial juncture" - acute care impact is a lagging indicator by 1-2 weeks after cases
  • Action must be taken to control cases in the zone
  • Effective today, three voluntary measures have been announced
  • Voluntary because current hospital capacity can meet demand, but current data is "a call to action"
  • 1) Family/private gatherings are limited to 15 people (down from 50). Fewer is better. Does not affect schools, theatres, or worship services but Covid guidance must be followed. Wedding and funerals may not have the reduction occur immediately but it is still encouraged for those planned
  • 2) Masks should be worn in all indoor work settings, except when alone (e.g. cubicle) or with an appropriate barrier
  • 3) Limit the number of cohorts to 3 (previously it was to "limit the number" without specification): household, school, and one social/sport/other
  • Measures are necessary to prevent further escalation of Covid-19
  • Believes that Edmontonians look out for each other and will do their part
  • Will consider any further measures if needed
  • While specific to Edmonton, all parts of the province should take note
Q&A
  • How concerning are the case numbers province wide with Thanksgiving/Halloween?: Concern right now is specific to Edmonton. Is seeing a fairly steady rate, followed by a sharp spike. Need to continue keeping case rates stable
  • Why not make the measures voluntary?: Has been clear that the two measures for mandatory measures (raising of hospitalizations >5% over two weeks or 50%+ ICU beds occupied). At this time, voluntary changes are to give opportunity to slow the case rates before the acute care use rises
  • Why has Calgary avoided a surge?: Don't think we know 100%. Can offer theories (e.g. - Calgary had a high case rate initially, so work went into ensuring risk was understood). Reminder that this no time for complacency
  • Why was no action taken for so long given Edmonton being on the watch list for weeks?: Notes that we have seen rises/falls without such measures and its important to balance Covid/other health balance. Edmonton's recent cases have surged in the past week
  • Should Edmontonians be blamed?: Wouldn't say blamed, but also notes that Edmonton's different experience to date may need to be considered. Focus groups have noted some people will only take measure if they are personally impacted
  • Will "voluntary" measures hold enough weight?: Edmontonians will decide if "voluntary" means enough. Office has committed to be transparent about what would reverse relaunch. Those haven't been hit and office is keeping their promise, but is giving Edmonton a chance to prevent them
  • Changes to messaging for certain groups?: Cases are still highest in 20-39 case group, so messaging is on how their actions may affect others. Working with teams to determine what messages resonate and what motivates people
  • Level of concern with Coalhurst Good News Centre outbreak?: Each incident is concerning. Focused on on level of communication office has had with faith leaders and their groups

Statements by Dr Hinshaw
Opioid Report
  • Many Albertans who use opioids face challenges and the pandemic has had dire impacts on their lives
  • In the first 6 months of 2020, 449 died from apparent unintentional opioid poisoning (301 between April and June)
  • Deaths rose during first few months of pandemic. Challenges were faced in accessing supports/service while increasing stress/anxiety/isolation occurred
  • 3,000+ emergency/urgent care visits related to opioid use between April and June
  • Other jurisdictions have seen similar trends
  • Covid protocol has been adjusted to ensure individuals who use drugs can access critical services (harm reduction to treatment to recovery)
  • Will continue to work to reduce the impact of Covid prevention measures on accessing services
  • Stresses that help is available and, if you use drugs, don't use them alone
  • "Ripple effects" of Covid is large and we need to balance Covid-19 and the impacts of the restrictions
Schools
  • 13 schools with alerts have had no transmission since
  • Active alerts/outbreaks (1+ cases) in 97 schools with 163 active cases in total (4% of schools)
  • 32 school outbreaks (2+ cases), 7 with likely transmission, 4 with 5+ cases
  • In school aged cases, weekly # of 5-19 year olds are most strongly trending with overall cases, with peak cases in age group matching peak cases in Alberta
  • Since school started, there has been a week-over-week decrease in cases for this age group despite increases in testing for this group
  • This isn't to minimize school safety, but to highlight importance of community transmission
Foothills
  • Death today was in Foothills
  • Foothills outbreak is concerning and AHS is moving quickly
  • 29 cases (17 patients), 3 deaths in total to date
  • AHS is testing and isolating with "significant precautions"
  • Multiple staff swabbing sites have been installed to increase staff testing on outbreak units. Staff on units are screened twice daily
  • Natural to ask if hospitals are at risk. AHS has moved quickly to protect
  • Stresses that policy is only part of the equation: we all must do our part
  • If you are sick, do not visit/enter a care facility and follow the public health measures "to the letter" while there
  • Recognizes the inconvenience and financial difficulty. Continues to advocate that employers support their employees whenever possible so they can stay home when sick...also recognizes that this can be difficult on employers
Thanksgiving
  • While we want to meet during Thanksgiving, we want to keep it safe
  • Keep it to a maximum 15 people outside your household
  • Have one person plate everyone's meals (or even pre-portion the meal)
Q&A - Second Wave
  • Do you agree with Trudeau's statement that we are in the second wave?: A "wave" implies we have no control over the transmission. Some provinces have determined what they call a wave. Doesn't think that's where Alberta is...case growth is growing but have been relatively stable. Waves are one possible future, as are "small ripples". Albertan's actions are going to decide which we see
  • Are targeted lockdowns being planned in the event of second wave?: It is an option (refers to "enhanced" category online)
Q&A - Covid Cases
  • Should we expect testing numbers to change with no more asymptomatic testing?: It hasn't impacted volume of testing to date. Seems too early to say
  • Why no new model?: Models do not predict future and, while a new model is in development, the overall question of "what we will see" in the fall is already publicly known
  • Is the outbreak in Hope Mission Shelter going to require an increase in distance between mats?: Yes, as per guidelines. Hasn't asked local colleague to ensure has occurred yet
  • Source for Foothills outbreak?: No further information
Q&A - Other
  • Officials in US/Canada are increasingly being personally targeted. Why is this happening? Are you?: Pandemic has caused suffering and health professionals become easy outlet for suffering. While receiving a lot of correspondence from Albertans (including personal and professional criticisms), hasn't received "hate mail or threats"
  • Do you think the harassment is tied to being a woman?: Difficult question to answer as she can only go with her own experience. May be interesting to discuss with male counterparts. Regardless, questions and criticism should be presented respectfully
  • You previously recommended supervised consumption sites for opioids. Are you still pressing for it?: Important to separate different bodies of work. Thinks that "broad spectrum of services" is important. Allocation of resources are policy decisions (defers to Ministers after this)

Statements by Dr Hinshaw:
School Cases
  • 5 schools have had alerts ended
  • 81 schools with 1+ cases (total of 126 cases)
  • 6 new school outbreaks (19 total), defined as 2+ cases in last 14 days
  • 2 schools with likely in-school transmission: Vimy Ridge in Edmonton and Springfield Elementary School in Peace River
  • Again, not unexpected
  • 2 schools on "Watch" status (5+ cases). Vimy Ridge has 6 cases currently
  • 3% of all schools have had cases to date. Transmission has been identified in ~3% of school with cases
  • Sees this as a positive start
Foothills Medical Centre
  • Covid death over weekend occurred at Foothills
  • All acute care outbreaks are taken very seriously
  • 14 patients, 4 staff members in 3 units have tested positive
  • Public health investigation underway and AHS has taken swift action
  • Widespread testing is underway and more cases are likely to be detected
  • Patients with symptoms or are positive are treated in designated rooms
  • Foothills is safe and there is no increased risk for patients
St Joseph's College
  • Men's residence site on the University of Alberta has an outbreak
  • 5 cases
Cohorts
  • Common question is "what are cohorts"?: Small group where physical distancing can be relaxed
  • Household (+15 others), with the cohort definition being consistent for the entire household
  • Coworkers or other people in religious gatherings are NOT cohorts
  • How many sports cohorts can a child be in?: Many factors, including sport, and must be personally decided
  • There is no plan to raise sport cohort size in the immediate future (currently 50)
Q&A - Foothills
  • How worrying is Foothills outbreak?: Acute care outbreaks are always a concern. Seems to have occurred with in-hospital transmission between patients. Factors surrounding the introduction of Covid into the hospital is being investigated. Lessons of Misericordia are being applied
  • Are patients/visitors/staff not masking?: Investigation underway, so no conclusion yet. Inconsistent masking use reported with visitors and being investigated. Report of staff member who worked while symptomatic. We need to better understand why these both occurred as to prevent it from happening again
  • Is it concerning one outbreak is in cardiac unit?: Absolutely a concern - heart disease is a risk factor. Patients will be tested regularly (even if asymptomatic) and situation will be monitored closely
Q&A - Schooling
  • Comments on slow test results for students?: Wants mild symptomatic students to get tested quickly so they can get back to school quickly if negative (currently a work in progress with a lot of work going into it). Close contacts, independent of test result, must stay home because negative tests may develop into positive cases
  • Edmonton Public School has 48 staff, 545 students sent home. Comment?: Knows this has significant impact, is incredibly inconvenient, and understands the frustration. Does not want to downplay this, but vast majority of cases acquired disease in community. Cases in school aged individuals tracks with cases in community (Interjection - I think this is to mean that schools aren't increasing transmission). Asks for patience for the next few weeks as techniques in isolating are refined
  • Were there projections for school cases?: Emphasizes that projections are just a ballpark.
  • How many cases are too many for in-person learning?: Repeats that school aged cases are tracking with community spread, with the important number being number of in-school transmission cases. Education is best given in-person and has a significant benefit to the student's overall health (including social development, learning, educational development)
  • BC reduced screening for schooling. Will Alberta?: Discussion has been made. Alberta isn't far enough along to determine if symptoms can be removed without increasing Covid outbreak risk. Will watch other regions to see their experience
Q&A - Other
  • Who polices gathering sizes in small communities?: Organizers of the event, participants. Assistance and reminders can be provided by law enforcement, public health services, and a complaints website is available through Environmental Public Health. Difficult to do in real time, so if you see an event, try to give AHS a heads up early
  • Plans to change gathering size?: Not planned. Currently watching patterns of transmissions and will discuss restrictions if needed
  • Update to spread of cases in Edmonton?: 1/2 of active cases in Edmonton are close contacts of a confirmed case. Seeing if this spread in particular can be reduced. 1/3 are unknown source and checking of trends are occurring with these cases. Many cases are related to social events, but seeing workplace spread as well
Additional information will be logged below:
  • Calgary Upper NE's active cases: 100 (rose to 100 over weekend)
  • Edmonton Northeast's active cases: 101 (+7 since Friday)

2020.09.11 20:09 Crunchymagee I think I got scammed and I want to know if I can be taken to collections if I close my account.

I went to a “job interview” yesterday and was told to bring my ID and a void cheque in case I was hired. It was for a company that (supposedly) sources people to act as extras for tv and commercials.
The lady who “interviewed” me didn’t really ask any questions about myself and sped through giving me information, just telling me to expect long days but high pay and told me I would need to create a profile for production companies to reference. On the computer, she had me fill in all my personal info including date of birth, address, phone number and banking info and took my photo (did not ask for my SIN thank goodness). When I left I received an email telling me that by entering my banking info I was actually subscribing to a service that will be billing me monthly to host my profile and that I can only unsubscribe through registered mail after three months.
It’s been hard to find much info on this company but I’ve found a couple complaints online from other people who have had the same experience, and they say the company is impossible to reach and ignores requests to unsubscribe even with registered mail.
I know I should have smelled a rat to begin with, and I know I’m at fault for giving my information but what I want to know is;
If I close my account can they go after me through collections and damage my credit?
Thank you for your help. (Alberta)

Larry joined the Army during the Korean War and used the GI bill to enroll at Southern Illinois University where he became the first person in the Blus family to get a college education. Immediately after he obtained his bachelor's degree, he studied and got his master's degree. He used these degrees in Zoology and Botany to study birds, working for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a leading biologist researching how DDE and DDT affected the eggshells of brown pelicans. He worked as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Corvallis 1998-2004; Raleigh Hills K-8 School, Portland 2005-2010; Alberta Rider Elementary School, Tigard, Ore., 2011-2012; Habitat for Humanity; and OSU Crossroads 1984-2004.
He was an avid philanthropist contributing to many organizations. His favorite hobbies were spending time with family, watching birds, reading, playing games, singing, attending church, listening to his wife sing in the church choir, watching his children and grandchildren play sports and perform. Larry never let a person pass without reaching out for a handshake or hand hold. He was welcomed into Heaven, with angels singing, "Well done."
A memorial service will be held at a date to be determined. His remains are interred at Oak Lawn Memorial Park, Corvallis, Ore. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift of remembrance of Larry to the National Wildlife Federation, the Macular Degeneration Association, Sarasota, Fla., or St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Beaverton, Ore. 2020.08.14 16:17 KingofTheNaturalOne My 2020 experience

Honestly this whole thing has been really good for me, my city isn't that hard hit (Alberta, Canada). I had had so much going on with my life in the end of 2019 beginning of 2020. I was working 2-3 days a week I had 4 classes in high school morning band 2 times per week and jazz band 2 times per week and marching band 1-4 days per week. March happened and everything stopped. I went from GOGOGOGOGO to wtf do I do now. I have been trying to quit porn for a whole and it has been going well. this whole quarantine thing has been hard for me as i have less things going on where my mind is occupied. I still did it (somehow) and have been off of porn for roughly 7 months now and this has changed my life :). I went back to work about 1 week after school let out as my parents had let me return as it was not as bad as they thought (thank goodness) and I have actually taken more of a responsibility in said job now I am in charge of training the new people and I am getting paid 3 dollars more per hour than I was making before :). During this last 5 months I have changed so much as a person. I have found many interests and hobbies that I had forgotten about because of my crazy schedule. I got back into reading and read all of the Lord of the rings books. I started an online d&d group and we play 2 times per week (that's what my Reddit username is based off of. I had a rough session where I never roller above a 5). I have built up a better relationship with my younger sister and we have grown super close! We have been playing board games such as crib monopoly and risk and we got a few newer ones like Catan and star wars outer rim. I have changed physically too. I have lost about 35 pounds and gained alot of muscle by doing at home workouts and not eating out anymore this might be because I am a 17 year old boy and now have the metabolism of a racehorse but still.
I have also valued my relationships alot more especially those at my church that I go to. we have been allowed to return to church starting last month and we have taken things such as instead of 2 services we have 5 services and social distancing and all that jazz. I had fallen away from my church and from God and when I had nothing during March-June I realized how important it is to my life. I had viewed church as an option more than a priority if that makes sense. I also started dating a girl from our church and that's pretty good :). I am going to start this new chapter of my life a completely different person than I was when I got back 6 months ago. my schedule will be pretty crazy coming into next year as I will still be in marching band (starting in October hopefully), starting university and working 2-3 days per week but I am going to embrace other things such as my social life (permitted covid doesn't go crazy), my church life and other things like reading books, hanging out with my sister and exercising!

End Notes

  1. Since 2010 self-employed workers can voluntarily participate in EI Special Benefit for Self-Employed Workers (SBSE) to gain access to many life event-type benefits accessible to regular employees, such as maternity and paternity leave programs, leave due to sickness or to care for an sick family member. In addition to this, current EI system allows certain exceptions for some non-standard workers. For example some individuals who work independently as barbers, hairdressers, taxi drivers, drivers of other passenger vehicles are eligible to receive benefits through the regular EI program. Fishermen are also included as insured persons under the EI Fishing Regulations. In the case of the self- employed fishermen, EI qualification is tied to income. In order to qualify for up to 26 weeks of benefit, they need to have earned between $2,500 to $4,200 in the last 31 weeks.
  2. The two main reasons for not contributing to the EI program were not having worked in the previous 12 months, and non-insurable employment (which includes self-employment).

2020.07.13 05:48 HowToPotatoWithGuy Looking to build a Gaming PC with a budget of $1250 CDN, with a max of $1500 CDN

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
The main role of the PC will be for gaming, but with Corona 19. My university/classes are online so I would be using it to do that also. I currently have a gaming laptop, but it's age and components are starting to show. So I am looking at getting something new to replace it that is not a laptop. Most of the games I have are older in age because of my computer, but for the most part I have been playing a wide variety of games. I currently play Racing games like Assetto Corsa Competizione and Automobilisata 2 with a racing wheel, I would like to play the Forza games if possible. I also play and would play games like rising storm 2: Vietnam, CSGO, R6, Satisfactory, Paradox interactive games, and other games I forgot. I would like to be able to play the new COD or BF games that come out in the future. I currently have a mindset when buying games of 1 would I like it and then 2, can I play it. I would like to play a lot more games but with my current rig, my selection is very restricted.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
My maximum budget is around $1500 CDN but would prefer something around $1250 CDN.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
I am in no rush to buy/build it, so the latest I would end up buying/building would be late August before university starts. I understand that it's not ideal for you guys in helping me, sorry.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
The only thing I would need to be included is the Tower and OS. It would be nice to have a few options for towers if you could provide some information on what to look for.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
I live in Alberta, Canada.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
I currently have a SAMSUNG LS24F354FHNXZA 24" (Actual size 23.5") Full HD 1920 x 1080 4ms (GTG) VGA HDMI AMD FreeSync Flicker-Free Technology Super Slim Design LED Backlit Gaming Monitor. I don't know if this is a great monitor for gaming, I got it as a gift. I would be looking at getting a second monitor, but don't count the second one as part of the build. I have 2015 Razer Kraken headphones. Logitech G502 Hero SE. Logitech Driving Force GT wheel, but planing of upgrading it soon. Planing on getting a Keyboard soon, but I don't really have allegiance to a brand I just looking at quality to price.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
No
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
It would be nice to have SSD for storage, would be nice to have around 1TB with the possibility of upgrading to more in the future. I don't know if having a USB 2.O is something you need to pay more for or still something special, but I would need 3 USB ports for the Mouse, Keyboard, and racing wheel. lastly have 2 HDMI ports would be nice.
What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.
I would need WiFi connectivity sadly, I have no way of connecting an ethernet cable to where I will have my computer. I can't give the specifics of my router as with the provided I am with and where I live there have been problems with the internet. Were almost every year we get a new one because their service is not up to what we are paying for so they give us a new one as reimbursement for the bad service.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
I am not a big fan of the smaller size towers, but I am open to what you guys suggest.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
I would probably need to have Windows 10, as I am able to get the Microsoft word, excel and all that for free with my school
Extra info or particulars:
It would be nice to have the ability to possibly upgrade the PC in the future if that is possible. I understand that being in Canada with Canadian prices makes having a good build hard. As I said, I am in no rush to build the PC now so I am whiling to wait some time to see if the component prices get better as time goes on with COVID or the Canadian dollar becomes stronger compared to the USD. I also don't really know the real difference between a 1000$, 1250$, 1500$ computer and would be great if you could help shine some light on the topic.
Thanks for the Help, You guys are doing god's work.
Edit, the 1TB idea forget it just give me a recommendation of how much space I should get

2020.07.11 02:02 a_toad_a_so AMA Discussion Thread

youtu.be/Lmu_P-7Aey4
I figured I'd post a thread for discussion about the AMA (link above). Below is a summary of the highlights (though I recommend watching the video and not just relying on my summary).

- Next quarterly report coming end of July
- Estimated current runway (not including future capital acquisition): Q4 2021
- Shanghai and Barbados offices closed
- Consolidated team size ~40
- Team has had an increase in productivity working remote
- 12 new team members in brand new roles to build and ship Moves fintech product
- will not be publishing financial statements due to financier requirements, and Moves is a competitive commercial product
- will be reporting OAN-related metrics related to use and adoption possibly beginning Q3
- team executed on 3-week sprint to get Moves alpha product ready for an Apil 6 launch to address COVID-19
- hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans have been released to the Moves customers, have began collecting repayments and are very happy with repayment/default rates
- team has been interviewing customers for feedback and further hone product-market fit
- partnerships with direct-to-consumer channels established
- data still being collected to demonstrate that the debt model works for third-party financing
- 2 teams working on The OAN maintenance (kernel and new wallet), 3 on Moves (product experience, data analysis and loan qualification, growth)
- Moves will expand in terms of product offerings, customer segments, and geographies
- looking at other financial products needed in the gig economy
- expanded customer segment recently through partnership with Hyr (gig staffing)
- expanded Moves into Alberta and British Columbia recently, now covering about 2/3 of the Canadian population
- Actively working on US expansion, timing uncertain due to COVID-19
- capital fundraising will be a focus over the next 6 months, both for equity and potential lenders
- made connections through prior government lobbying effort, but nothing material to date
- Matt plans to continue talking and writing about policy reform
- gig/freelance work will continue to be an important segment of the economy and they need safety nets
- gig platforms are under continuing pressure to give their workers these safety nets, which presents a unique opportunity for third-party companies like Moves
- discussions with Uber, DoorDash, and Instacart, looking to develop those relationships and the value Moves adds
- team actively working on prototypes for AION DeFi with Moves in 3 areas: improving credit efficiency, using AION to align customer interest, and leveraging The OAN to build an open financial reputation system
- UWaterloo privacy research is ongoing
- Moves's pool of financing may be both traditional institutional investors and DeFi
- target customer is independent workers on online marketplaces, and a potential user demographic of over 20% of the North American workforce
- Moves aims to be the leading North American financial services provider for freelance/gig workers to fill the gap left by the banking industry
- goal is to have a demonstration of what Moves using AION looks like before end of Q3
- loans are unsecured term personal loans with automatic withdrawals, with approvals based on banking data and gig worker profile data
- team is developing prorietary mechanism to collect gig platform data without API integration, also working on relationships with platforms that could lead to integrations
- more info on legal structure between The OAN and Moves in the next month or two, looks at ways to bring value back to The OAN and ensure adequate capitalization for Moves
- still work to be done to improve the open-source protocol, dev team dedicated to this, but protocol is around 90% of where the team wants it to be
- new wallet with staking integration coming (possible future DeFi integrations) before end of Q3
- looking to cultivate consumer-driven value for AION
- Bithumb listing and USDT pair on Binance already this year, other exchange efforts are ongoing
- UWaterloo research focusing on privacy problems that need to be solved to enable an open financial reputation system
- End of TRS (the "AION Eighthing") is a circulation milestone already worked into the economic design
BONUS ROUND: Matt also tweeted after the AMA about AXIAcoin.com when a community member tweeted to him asking about "Project Apollo."
The OAN also made its way onto one of Deloitte's slides at WAIC earlier today alongside Ethereum, Hyperledger, and a few others as a blockchain infrastructure they work with (waic.bestv.com.cn/?meet_id=215 at 03:06:41)

2020.06.25 03:00 portlane William Barber (Oct. 22, 1924 - April 30, 2020)

William Roy 'Bill' Barber
Oct. 22, 1924 - April 30, 2020
Dearly loved father, brother, friend and counselor, Bill Barber, of Lake Oswego, passed away peacefully in his sleep Thursday, April 30, 2020, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, John and Mandy Barber, in Corvallis. He was 95.
Bill was born Oct. 22, 1924 in Salem, Ore., the second son of William Hugh and Grace Stewart Barber. He joined the Navy the month that he turned 18, and spent WWII in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and resumed his studies at Willamette University, pursuing a degree in Romance Languages. There, he met Jean Carrico, from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. They married Dec. 10, 1949 and, in 1953, were joined by a daughter, Diana Ruth. As director and house parent(s) at what was then Skipworth Juvenile Home, in Springfield, Bill found a calling in social work. They moved to Colorado where Bill attained his MSW at the University of Denver. Returning to Oregon in the summer of 1958, the family settled on Oak Street, later renamed Oak Terrace, in Lake Oswego. A son, John William, was born that fall, completing their family. Bill spent the majority of his career as an Adult & Family Therapist with the Tualatin Valley Mental Health Center, in Beaverton, retiring in 1989. Bill and Jean enjoyed many happy years of retirement together, traveling, gardening, and passionately supporting humanitarian causes. They were active members of Lake Grove Presbyterian Church. Bill's life was characterized by compassion, humor, and service to others. He did pro bono counseling for the church, the Suicide Hotline, and anyone, young or old, who needed a nonjudgmental listening ear. Their grandchildren were a special joy, and Bill and Jean loved attending their many plays, concerts and sporting events. Jean passed away in September, 2005, after almost 56 years of marriage. Bill continued to live on Oak Street, sustained by the loyal companionship of his dear friends and neighbors, Jackie and Stan Aschenbrenner, Joyce and Chris Swift, and Kathy Kremer and Stephen Young.
Bill is much missed by his daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Dave Roberts; their son and daughter-in-law, Don and May Mitchell Roberts; and great-grandchildren, Devlin, Patz, and Finnian, of Anchorage, Alaska; son and daughter-in-law, John and Amanda (Mandy) Barber, of Corvallis, Ore.; grandchildren, Kaitlin (Josh) Hoffman, Erin (Kyle) Brown; great-grand-daughter, Georgia Lily Brown; grandson, Daniel Barber; sister, Ruth Simpson, of Kingman, Ariz.; brother, Martin and sister-in-law, Arkley Barber, of Golden, Colo., and their families; along with many loving friends.
A memorial service will be held at Lake Grove Presbyterian Church on a date to be determined. Burial will be at Roseburg National Cemetery in Roseburg, Ore. Remembrances may be made to Oregon Public Broadcasting, in memory of William "Bill" Barber, at OPB.org/Contribute, or mailed to OPB, 7140 S. Macadam Ave., Portland, OR. 97219.

Cineplex (TSX: $CGX)
CINEPLEX INC (TSX: $CGX ) STOCK OPPORTUNITY
Another great medium risk but high potential return stock. The stock has taken a beating because of Covid19 & movie theater closures.
Investors think Cineworld's C$34/share buyout offer will be cancelled, yet Reuter's reported, "Cineworld Says No Change In Co's Position On Cineplex Takeover Since March" on April 7. That's double your money at C$11.69 (at post) if it goes through.
Investors also think Cineplex will cancel their monthly $0.15 per share dividend in their next ER that they delayed until June 29, 2020.
Investors are discounting Cineplex's possible rise of online movie rentals to offset their onsite losses.
The odds don't get better than this but do your Due Diligence before investing.

The Motley Fool described Cineplex as having a "virtual monopoly" over the cinema market in Canada.

2019-present: Proposed acquisition by Cineworld
On December 16, 2019, Cineplex announced a definitive agreement to be acquired by the British cinema operator Cineworld Group, the second-largest film exhibitor worldwide, pending shareholder and regulatory approval. Cineworld would be paying $34 per-share—a 42% premium over Cineplex's share price prior to the announcement, valuing the company at CDN$2.8 billion. Cineworld planned to pay US$1.65 billion, and to fund the remainder by taking on debt.
The sale was approved by Cineplex shareholders in February 2020. Activist shareholder Bluebell Capital Partners called for the Canadian government to block the sale, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. which in turn led to the temporary closure(s) of all Cineplex movie theatres across Canada since March 16, 2020, and up until further notice.

Newzoo: Global esports will top $1 billion in 2020, with China as the top market (Feb 25, 2020):
Global esports revenues will surpass $1 billion in 2020 for the first time — without counting broadcasting platform revenues, according to market researcher Newzoo.
Globally, the total esports audience will grow to 495.0 million people in 2020, Newzoo said. Esports Enthusiasts (people who watch more than once a month) make up 222.9 million of this number.
In 2020, $822.4 million in revenues—or three-quarters of the total market—will come from media rights and sponsorship.
“As the esports market matures, new monetization methods will be implemented and improved upon,” said Remer Rietkerk, head of esports at Newzoo, in the report. “Likewise, the number of local events, leagues, and media rights deals will increase; therefore, we anticipate the average revenue per fan to grow to $5.27 by 2023.”

PLAYDIUM
Playdium is a family entertainment centre chain owned by Cineplex Entertainment through its subsidiary Player One Amusement Group. The flagship location in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada launched as Sega City @ Playdium near Square One Shopping Centre on September 7, 1996. The 11 acres (480,000 sq ft) centre cost CA$17 million to build and included an arcade, batting cages, go-karts and mini-golf. A partnership with Sega GameWorks, it featured many arcade games from that company such as Daytona USA, and eight-player racing setups for Indy 500 (as Virtua Indy) and Manx TT Super Bike. Indy 500 remains available today. In 1999, the centre was renamed to Playdium. The company opened up two more locations in Brampton and Whitby in late 2019.

The Rec Room
The Rec Room is a Canadian chain of entertainment restaurants owned by Cineplex Entertainment. First opening in Edmonton in 2016, its locations feature entertainment and recreational attractions such as an arcade, driving simulators, recreational games, and virtual reality, as well as restaurants and bars, and an auditorium with a cinema-style screen, which can be used for concerts and other live events.
The Toronto location features The Void virtual reality attraction. In July 2018, Cineplex announced that it would become the exclusive Canadian franchisee of The Void and add additional locations (such as the Mississauga and West Edmonton Mall locations).

FOOD & BEVERAGES
Cineplex has an Outtakes (French: Restoplex) restaurant in 94 theatres, some which replace previous restaurant partners (Burger King, KFC and New York Fries) and others which introduce restaurants at locations which did not previously feature one. VIP Cinemas and some Xscape locations feature a licensed lounge with more premium offerings compared to Outtakes. Poptopia is a flavoured popcorn restaurant offered in a full-service format at 22 locations. Other Cineplex theatres may feature Poptopia at the concession stand, but only in the caramel corn and/or kettle corn flavours.
Ice cream at Cineplex locations debuted with Baskin-Robbins and TCBY. Beginning in December 2007, Yogen Früz became the preferred partner. On January 1, 2014, Cineplex acquired a 50% stake in Yoyo's Yogurt Café. As of January 2017, 77 Cineplex theatres feature Yoyo's restaurants, while Yogen Fruz is still available in 23 Cineplex theatres while TCBY is available in 16 locations. Cineplex also manages Melt Sweet Creations, an in-house dessert bouqtiue brand targeted at women ages 19-35 debuted in December 2017 at Cineplex Cinemas Queensway and VIP. Melt is available at 13 locations.
Beverages are available in both cold and hot formats. Cold beverages include the Coca-Cola lineup, which replaced the Pepsi lineup used at locations formerly owned by Famous Players. 12 locations feature Coca-Cola Freestyle. Hot beverages include Starbucks as the incumbent provider with 105 locations, all which offer Pike Place Roast coffee (regular or decaf) and Tazo tea. Select locations also offer premium drinks such as caffè mocha or caramel macchiato. Tim Hortons is available as a full-service restaurant in five locations,[75] with Brossard being the only location to offer both Tim Hortons and Starbucks.
In most theatres, Cineplex offers sale of alcohol to 19+ guests in Ontario (18+ in Alberta) similar to the VIP theatres albeit from a selection of beer or cider beverages.
If Aurora Cannabis (ACB) & Cineplex (CGX) partnered up to offer CBD & THC infused Cannabis 2.0 edibles in movie theaters, especially the IMAX & 3D ones, it should do very well. Canadian Cannabis Industry stocks should also do well as I posted earlier Cannabis Stocks Opportunity.

Cineworld to buy Canada's largest movie theatre chain in $2.8B deal (Dec 16, 2019):
Cineplex’s stock had been trading close to the Cineworld offer price of C$34 per share through early 2020, but has since plunged 40% following the virus outbreak.
Cineplex could lose a potential lifeline if its outstanding debt exceeds more than $725 million. As of December 31, 2019, the debt level was $625 million. The debt might balloon past the threshold with a further lockdown extension.

Staggered seating, nostalgic films: Cinemark offers a look at movie going post-coronavirus (Apr 15, 2020):
Cinemark, the third-largest movie theater chain in the U.S., hopes to reopen at least some of its doors to the public in July.
With no major movie release until mid-July, theaters could play “library” movies, which are movies that have already previously been released in cinemas, for several weeks.
If social distancing restrictions are still in place the company said it would either sell every other reserved seat in the theater or suspend reservations and just sell 50% of the tickets per theater.
“Even at peak periods of time in a normal environment, our occupancy levels range from 20% to 30% and we can operate profitably during those scenarios...” - CEO Mark Zoradi
He added that Cinemark has seen attendance as low as 10% and still was able to turn a profit.

North Vancouver's Park & Tilford Cineplex permanently closed (May 20, 2020)
The company closed all 165 theatres across Canada in March due to COVID-19, but the 1,382-seat Brookesbank Avenue location won’t be among those reopening, Cineplex has confirmed.
With Cineplex closing its Lower Lonsdale theatre in 2019, it leaves Park Royal as the only place to catch a big screen flick on the North Shore.
“We thank the community for their patronage over the years, and look forward to welcoming them at neighbouring Cineplex Cinemas Park Royal and VIP,” said Sarah Van Lange, executive director of communications. “I’ll note that our intent is to repurpose the Park & Tilford theatre space, which we’ll have more details on at a later date.”

Alert: Cineplex (TSX:CGX) Could Be Acquired by This Incredibly Unlikely Source (May 12, 2020):
Despite Cineworld maintaining its commitment to buy Cineplex, the market has a different opinion. Remember, Cineplex agreed to be acquired at $34 per share. As I type this, the stock trades at $14.44. There’s no way the spread would be that wide, unless investors were writing off the acquisition completely.
Fortunately for beleaguered Cineplex shareholders, a new suitor could very well come along — one virtually nobody sees coming.
Although I think there’s potential for a private equity group or some other deep-pocketed investor taking a run at Cineplex’s cheap assets, there’s a much more interesting suitor on the horizon.
That acquirer is Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN).

AMC says it will no longer play Universal Studios films (Apr 28, 2020):
“AMC believes that with this proposed action to go to the home and theaters simultaneously, Universal is breaking the business model and dealings between our two companies,” AMC Chief Executive Officer Adam Aron said in a letter addressed to Universal Studios Chairman Donna Langley.
Universal added that the company looked forward to having “additional private conversations” with AMC but was “disappointed by this seemingly coordinated attempt ... to confuse our position and our actions.”

Cineworld joins AMC in banning films from Universal Studios (April 29, 2020):
Cineworld, the world’s second largest cinema chain, has followed its rival AMC in banning Universal Studios films from its cinemas when they reopen, after the Hollywood film-maker released Trolls On Tour direct to streaming platforms.
“There is a certain system of windows which are a custom in the market and this sets the time difference between the theatrical market and other ancillary markets, among them streaming. Any movie that will not respect this window will not be shown in Cineworld group,” Mooky Greidinger, Cineworld’s chief executive, said on Wednesday.

CONCLUSION:
Nothing beats watching a great movie on the big screen in premium format:
  • Prime Seats
  • IMAX
  • UltraAVX
  • D-Box
  • VIP Cinemas
  • 4DX
I'm sick of the congested internet & buffering of online movies & services during Covid19. They need to upgrade the internet infrastructure to 5G & Fiber Optics before it can really grow in my opinion -- especially buffering 4K & 8K movies & future tech that will only require more bandwidth going forward.
Younger people are not afraid of Covid19 like the older crowd. When theaters open, they will rush in to see their favourite movies.
Betting that people won't want to go to movie theaters when they re-open, is like betting the same against live sporting events or music concerts.
No home movie theater can match a real movie theater, even the smaller discount ones, unless you're Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos etc.
With Cineplex's Canadian Monopoly & diversification into other entertainment arenas like eSports & Virtual Reality, as long as they don't go bankrupt & social distancing restrictions are loosened, the stock should increase 2 to 3 times by end of 2021 in my opinion -- especially if the Cineworld Buyout goes as planned or another company like Amazon buys them out for a strong presence & control in Canada.
If a Coronavirus Vaccine is discovered sooner than later, then this stock will rebound accordingly & rapidly -- especially if they don't cancel or even if they do, resume Dividend payments in the future. At current prices, Dividend yield is about 13% per year.
---------------------------------------------
Social distance cinema: drive-in theatres boom – in pictures (May 5, 2020):
We are all social creatures & want to go to movie theater as a social activity, to see & be seen; otherwise, why would Drive In Movie theaters boom during Covid19?
If no one goes out to be seen anymore, then all the Vanity Goods & Services will go under too & we will all dress in sweat pants & T-Shirt -- no need for designer suits & dresses working & staying at home. LOL ;p
https://www.theguardian.com/world/gallery/2020/may/05/social-distance-cinema-drive-in-theatres-boom-coronavirus-in-pictures
---------------------------------------------
Internet Bandwidth Requirements:
Online streaming remains the biggest source of 4K content, led by Netflix and Amazon’s growing selection of original series. But many consumer broadband connections aren’t fast enough to allow reliable 4K streaming.
Home Theater Movie Resolutions:
  • 4K (UHD): 3,840 x 2,160 pixels
  • 1080p (Full HD): 1,920 x 1,080 pixels
  • 720p (HD): 1,280 x 720 pixels
  • 480p (SD): 640 x 480 pixels
  • 8K: 7,680 x 4,320 pixels
For comparison purposes, 70mm film - still considered by many to be the gold standard - is roughly equivalent to a 12K resolution in digital terms, so digital's still got some catching up to do on that score.

Absolute thresholds: >5% hospitalization over two weeks, ICU capacity in a zone >50% capacity are signs for slowdown. Notes they are lagging indicators (2-3 weeks after transmission, slow compared to the 5-8 days for illness). Sharp rises of cases in a region (particularity with unknown source) are "contextual indicators" that will be used to also guide decision making.
Update 2: A question was asked about Quebec's masking policy and how public officials feel about it in Alberta. Dr Hinshaw recommends masking if you will be within 2 metres of a person (in addition to current distancing guidelines). Kenney mentions 40 million masks are on order for the end of the month for public distribution and will make an announcement closer to the day.
Update 3 - The hospitalization by region has been updated.

2020.05.01 21:00 portlane Margaret Groth (March 1, 1926 - March 14, 2020)

Margaret Louise Groth
March 1, 1926 - March 14, 2020
Margie Groth, at 94, surrounded by the love of her family at home, passed March 14, 2020.
She was born March 1, 1926 in Penhold, Alberta, Canada. She grew up with her parents, on the family farm, as the youngest of 11 siblings in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. Margie was a resilient strong farm girl with hands that demonstrated her hard and robust life.
Margie attended Galt School of Nursing in Lethbridge. Post graduation, to further her nursing training and career, she later attended John Hopkins and Mayo Clinic studying and practicing as a surgical nurse.
She met her husband Don on a blind date, set up by friends and married on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 1951. They raised their family and planted roots in N.E. Portland in their forever home of 60 years.
Throughout her life, Margie enjoyed many wonderful activities alongside her husband and family. Camping, traveling, golf, gardening and growing beautiful dahlias and roses brought her great joy and gratitude. She also enjoyed hunting and her husband Don, who always commented in admiration that Margie was a better shot than he. Margie very much enjoyed reading and cheering on all sports. She watched sports passionately almost every day and especially loved "her Blazers."
In retirement, Margie was a committed volunteer and supporter of the Roseway Lion's Club & Meals On Wheels. Well into her 80's, she and Don delivered meals to others and picked up and delivered eyes for the Oregon Eye Bank.
Margie's final years were spent joyously enriched by the wonderful family of residents and staff at Cherrywood Village Assisted Living. Many called her "Mama" and loved her dearly.
Margie was a leader, role model and a rock to our family. She was filled with abundant gratitude and so agreeable, often answering "Ok" to any request. She showed graciousness and kindness always, greeting others with a smile: warm, kind and welcoming.
Margie's religious beliefs helped guide her life and her favorite hymn was, "I Know that My Redeemer Lives."
Don Groth, her lifelong companion of 68 years, preceded her in death. Margie is survived by her three daughters, Barb (Jean), JoAnne, and Jean (Thomas); grandchildren, Joel (Sarah), Melissa (Shane), Laura (Jeremiah), Teresa, Marla (Evan); and great-grandchildren, Bryce, Claire, Adeline, Ozzie, Troy, Tyler, Margot and Ada.
Service will be held at a later time when gatherings are permitted to honor her abundant life. Donations in Margie's honor may be made to Meals on Wheels, Cherry Blossom Center.

2020.04.16 02:35 Od29 Pushback when rolling out 2-Step Verification and Mobile Device Policy

I have been advocating better security at my school for years. It took forever for me to be able to shut down direct RDP and set up IPSEC VPN. And for the better part of a year now - I have been pushing the need to enforce 2-step authentication (or any MFA) and to implement an MDM policy on school-owned laptops and personal phones. I am finally just getting traction and things seem to be rolling along smoothly now - I thought I'd share some of my experiences. I would think most schools have had all this for years - but I bet a lot of the smaller districts or regional authorities are in the same boat as me - so I thought I'd share.I'd love to hear how other admins facing push-back from administration have tackled this.
TL;DR - People fear change. Come prepared. Get Creative. Dig in.
Heads up - I'm in Alberta, Canada - so a lot of this won't exactly apply .. but I know many states have similar legislation and regulations so hopefully its still relatable.
Getting buy-in from Administration
The gist of it is that administration is more than happy to say "Go for it" .. as long as it doesn't affect them. As soon as they find out it also applies to them they try to hold it up in any way they can "We need to consult with staff" ... "we need to make a policy for this first" ... "we need to have a meeting with the policy review board before we can make this policy" .. exhausting.
Step 1 - Show Efficacy
Google published research that shows how effective basic account hygiene is at preventing account takeovers. Two factor authentication is 96% effective at preventing most common hacking attempts.
https://security.googleblog.com/2019/05/new-research-how-effective-is-basic.html
Simply put - if the school is using online services without 2FA / MFA .. its not a question of "If" .. its a question of "When" ..
Step 2 - Show it is industry standard
The Freedom of Information Act (FOIP) is too often cited as a way to justify things .. its sad a lot of people simply don't know the act. Well, I went through the FOIP act .. I also went through the Provincial School Act (now Education Act) - In both acts, I found nothing in there that specifically mentioned safeguarding accounts or mobile devices. I did however find two other places that did:
  1. The SIS (PowerSchool) synchronizes with the province using a plugin interface that the province develops. Other states and provinces have similar things. I did some digging and turns out there was a provincial document called "Security Controls for School Authorities" .. and it requires schools to have multi-factor authentication. In fact - superintendents already had to sign off that their districts were compliant. o_O
  2. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada has a wonderful set of articles on Mobile Devices and Online Services at work. https://www.priv.gc.ca/en/privacy-topics/employers-and-employees/mobile-devices-and-online-services-at-work/ In it, it states quite plainly: Organizations considering BYOD need to protect the enterprise information accessed from and residing on employees’ mobile devices .. emphasis on "accessed from" So even though the teachers are using GSuite which is in the cloud - the devices still need to have BYOD policies and basic security controls.
2-Step Verification
The biggest thing to remember about 2-step verification is that you can't enforce it without locking out all the accounts that don't have it. I gave them a specific timeline to get it done .. the date came and only one person had enrolled .. so I turned on enforcement at 9am .. then turned it back off 15 minutes later. That afternoon I had all but five enrolled.
The hold outs refused to install an authenticator app or give their cell phone number in order to verify their identity. That's okay - its their personal device - I can't make them. So the work around for this was to purchase a $20 USD Yubico Key and have them verify their identity using the school phone. Security keys are MUCH more of a pain than a mobile authenticator app .. I expect most to start using their phones after the first time they encounter a "Insert your security key" prompt. If teachers start pulling the "I lost my security key" gig .. I'll just give their key to the school administrator and make them come to her everytime they need to authenticate. It should not be this hard.
I encouraged staff to use the Microsoft Authenticator for both their Google account and their Microsoft account. I will be moving them off of local domain and purely into the cloud next .. so I figured its probably best to go directly to the MS Authenticator. It can back up their MFA keys to the cloud too so if they switch their phones - they don't lose everything.
In order to get Google working with the Microsoft Authenticator - it took some playing. When you initially set up 2-step authentication .. you have to verify yourself and your only options are "Security Key" or "Text Message or Voice Call". Where is the mobile authenticator app? You have to use the text message / voice call method first .. and then you can add a mobile authenticator. Once that's done, you can remove the phone from the account. Since Administrators in GSuite can remove 2-Step authentication from an account, its not as vital to have it.
Mobile Device Policy
The school is primarily on Google and only uses Windows on the teacher laptops, and at that its primarily just for IT admin stuff ... get the Office 365 licenses assigned and push out inTune policies.
For Windows: The Provincial software agreement includes licenses for A3 which includes Intune and Endpoint management. For laptops I pushed out a policy to encrypt the laptop drives using BitLocker, storing the keys in the cloud. I set it up so that users could enroll other devices as long as they had TPMv2 compliant capabilities. You can use GPO too to auto-enroll them into inTune. Once that was done I drafted a baseline security policy (bunch of settings that I have dubbed "secure thy laptop") .. Microsoft has a lot of articles on best practices for baseline security policies. I set up the policies for the laptops. Had the school been using O365 instead of Google, I would have set up a Mobile device policy too.
For GSuite for Education: In Device Management, I enabled Mobile Management only for the Staff OU. I set it to "Advanced". I needed to obtain an Apple MDM push certificate so it would work with iOS. Was used to doing that when we used Meraki - it should be pretty painless for most admins. Using "Advanced" means you have to deal with Google Device Policy .. which is going to kick you again and again .. but I still think its worth the pain. I then went into Android and iOS settings and enforced the work profile.
So this is where the pain starts. The user gets a warning that says something to the effect of "Your organization requires additional security measures" .. it then prompts them to install Device Policy .. and flashes warning after warning mentioning things like "can access personal information" "can wipe your device" .. Now... I had exhaustively educated staff on this for a month or so .. but despite that .. nearly every staff member denied installation of Google Device Policy. And .. when they already had the school account added to their Gmail, it locked them out of their personal gmail too until they removed the school account. For the few that accepted it at the initial prompt - it went smoothly and they had virtually no issues. For the majority that denied it - it was a downward spiral after that. Needed to manually remove the accounts, manually install the device policy app .. what a pain. And the whole time I just couldn't put them at ease about it. about 40% of the staff (Right now anyway) are saying they simply won't get email from their phone. Their prerogative. The way I see it, accessing your school email on your personal device is a privilege not a right - if you want to use it - there are requirements. Of course - because that wasn't the norm from the beginning - its an uphill battle.
Google also has some nice support articles at : https://support.google.com/a/answe173390
For iPhone users (which seem to be the hardest hit by this): OS Security and Management: https://support.google.com/a/users/topic/9335665
Within the above page they can look at:

I guess what's funny about this whole thing is that a year from now they will know that every time they log into a new device, as well as every few months, they will have to enter a code from their phone. It will be completely normal to them by that time. Nobody will notice it or think of it .. and all this pain today will most likely have been overblown for no reason.

In depth Virus news

Billionaires Want People Back to Work. Employees Aren’t So Sure - Bloomberg reports that there are increasing calls from some business leaders to get people back to work. They want to revive an economy that could face its worst quarterly drop ever -- even if it means pulling back on social distancing measures that public health officials say can help stop coronavirus. These investors aren’t prizing profits over lives, they say, they’re just willing to risk some horrors to avoid others. “You’re picking the better of two evils,” said Golisano (founder and chairman of the payroll processor Paychex Inc), who wants people to go back to their offices in states that have been relatively spared by the coronavirus but remain at home in hot spots. “You have to weigh the pros and cons.” Dick Kovacevich (ex Wells Fargo & Co. CEO until 200), wants to see healthy workers below about 55 or so to return to work late next month if the outbreak is under control. “We’ll gradually bring those people back and see what happens. Some of them will get sick, some may even die, I don’t know,” said Kovacevich, who was also the bank’s chairman until 2009. “Do you want to suffer more economically or take some risk that you’ll get flu-like symptoms and a flu-like experience? Do you want to take an economic risk or a health risk? You get to choose.”

Andy Slavitt's daily twitter opinion piece has come out and it's a mixed bag - Andy Slavitt (Former Medicare, Medicaid, ACA head for Obama and well worth following on Twitter) has given his daily thread update here. The takeaways: Infections are climbing faster than in the other severely hit countries. More could die from lack of access to a bed or a nurse or a ventilator than necessary. The shelter in place restrictions make absolute sense. The scientists are gloomy, they generally don’t like any solution or recommendation other than complete lock down, testing we don’t have, and strict controls. He calls Trump's suggestion to "pack the churches" on Easter the "Easter Sunday massacre". "America First is becoming America Last as other governments are centralizing decisions. Ordering tests. Centralizing supply orders. Distributing according to need. One amazing scientist told me our curve will go “from vertical to erect” if we don’t change these simple things."

13 Deaths in a Day: An ‘Apocalyptic’ Coronavirus Surge at an N.Y.C. Hospital - The NY Times (paywall, link) says that hospitals in the city are facing the kind of harrowing increases in cases that overwhelmed health care systems in China and Italy. A doctor gives his view; “The frustrating thing about all of this is it really just feels like it’s too little, too late. Like we knew — we knew it was coming. Today is kind of getting worse and worse. We had to get a refrigerated truck to store the bodies of patients who are dying. We are, right now, scrambling to try to get a few additional ventilators or even CPAP machines. If we could get CPAP machines, we could free up ventilators for patients who need them. You know, we now have these five vents. We probably — unless people die, I suspect we’ll be back to needing to beg for ventilators again in another day or two. There’s a mythical 100 vents out there which we haven’t seen. Leaders in various offices, from the president to the head of Health and Hospitals, saying things like, ‘We’re going to be fine. Everything’s fine.’ And from our perspective, everything is not fine.... I want people to know that this is bad. People are dying. We don’t have the tools that that we need in the emergency department and in the hospital to take care of them, and — and it’s really hard." There's also a video of the scenes inside the hospital here.

How the Pandemic Will End: The U.S. may end up with the worst COVID-19 outbreak in the industrialized world. This is how it’s going to play out. - The Atlantic has written a lengthy opinion piece (here) discussing what it thinks is likely to happen in the coming weeks and months in the US. A study released by a team at Imperial College London concluded that if the pandemic is left unchecked, those beds will all be full by late April. By the end of June, for every available critical-care bed, there will be roughly 15 COVID-19 patients in need of one. By the end of the summer, the pandemic will have directly killed 2.2 million Americans, notwithstanding those who will indirectly die as hospitals are unable to care for the usual slew of heart attacks, strokes, and car accidents. It goes on to explain what it thinks needs to change to avoid this worst case scenario.

Mississippi governor Orders Limited Gatherings, Declares Most Businesses 'Essential,' Supersedes Local Safety Efforts - The Jackson Free press reports (link). The order seems to declare that most types of businesses in Mississippi are "essential" and thus exempt from social-distancing requirements suggested in the order. "The uninterrupted delivery of essential services and functions is vital to infrastructure viability, critical to maintain continuity of functions critical to public health and safety, as well as economic and national security, and is crucial to community resilience, continuity of essential functions and to promote the security and safety of Mississippi residents even as the nation limits human interaction and engages in social distancing," the order stated. Notably, Reeves' executive order supersedes any orders by local mayors or other governing body in Mississippi that conflict with the businesses and organizations he deems exempt as "essential" businesses. Examples of business declared as "essential" by the governor include department stores, offices, factories whilst cafes and restaurants can remain open provided no more than 10 people are dining in at any time. These rules are much more liberal than most other states.

- ‘This Is Not A Game’: Perdue Farms Workers Walk Out Over Coronavirus Concerns - Approximately 50 workers at the Perdue Farms plant in Kathleen, Georgia, walked off the job Monday morning, saying they don’t feel safe working there during the coronavirus pandemic according to a Local news report. Kendaliyn Granville told CBS affiliate WMAZ some workers on the production line were in contact with people who tested positive for COVID-19 and the company should do more to protect workers. “We’re not getting nothing — no type of compensation, no nothing, not even no cleanliness, no extra pay — no nothing. We’re up here risking our life for chicken,” she said. Perdue says it is doing “everything we can to take good care of our Associates while continuing to produce safe and reliable food.”

- Come again...? US craft/hobby retail chain Michaels has told employees they are 'essential' and must continue working 'for the makers' during the coronavirus outbreak. "I am so worried for my coworkers," a Michaels manager speaking on the condition of anonymity told Business Insider. "If I get sick I will likely recover without incident. My coworkers and other vulnerable people could die. We are expendable. Just a means to make money." There's more on this here.

Supply chain specific news

The problems with invoking the defense production act - Californian Democrat Congresswoman Katie Porter has attacked President Trump on Twitter (link) over his announcement that he's invoking the defense production act (an act dating back to 1950 which allows the US government to mandate manufacturing to produce articles badly in need by the country). She says that the Trump administration has not finalized the rules for ordering emergency medical supplies. The result is that whilst the Administration says it's placing orders under the Defense Production Act, it seems that the department for Health and Human Services (HHS) doesn't have policies in place to actually execute those orders or coordinate them with agencies like FEMA. Don't expect PPE and ventilator shortages in the US to ease any time soon.

Indian seaports declare force majeure - Splash247 says that several major Indian ports, including those operated by Adani Ports, the country’s largest private port operator, have declared force majeure as the country started a three-week lockdown in an attempt to contain the spread of the coronavirus. India’s shipping ministry has issued a letter allowing ports to consider the coronavirus pandemic as valid grounds for invoking force majeure on port activities and operations. The decision follows the government of India announcing a nationwide lockdown on March 24 and will affect all 1.3bn of its citizens. A consultant from CTI said "Where ports are either closed or congested, liners will then need to over-carry imports and discharge them elsewhere for transhipment and later shipment back to their destination ports. Additional costs, and containers detained for longer will be the outcome. The inability to lift exports can have negative impacts on load factors and utilisation,”. (Personal note: Expects delays and costs in the Indian supply chain to get worse in the coming weeks as a result of this).

Three American carriers seek emergency tie-up - Splash247 reports (Link) that three American container lines have sought to form an emergency alliance to cope with the virus fall out. “The proposed agreement would authorize Crowley, King Ocean and Seaboard to discuss and agree upon the removal of one or more vessels from their trades, the coordination of timetables, sailing dates, frequency of sailings, and the carrying capacity offered by each of them,” Alphaliner noted in its most recent weekly report.

LA, Long Beach terminals adjust hours to disinfect between shifts - Freightwaves says Los Angeles and Long Beach container terminals have adjusted their second-shift operating hours to provide time to disinfect all handling equipment between shifts. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended the daily cleaning and disinfecting of frequently touched surfaces and objects to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Second-shift gate operations now begin at 7 p.m. and end at 4 a.m. at APM Terminals’ Pier 400 at the Port of LA as well as Everport Terminal Services, Fenix Marine Services, TraPac, West Basin Container Terminal and Yusen Terminals.

Supply chain companies to launch healthcare industry exchange - DCVelocity says that supply chain technology and risk management firm Resilinc is responding to increased demand for critical healthcare supplies by launching the Resilinc Exchange, an online clearinghouse designed to match available inventory with hospitals that need items to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, including personal protective equipment (PPE) and other medical supplies. In a webinar held Thursday, the company outlined plans for the exchange, which officials say they hope to launch by mid April.

Is It Time to Rethink Globalized Supply Chains? - MIT Sloan (one of the globally leading supply chain business schools) has an interesting 7 minute read (currently not behind its paywall) on how supply chains need to adapt once the pandemic is over. Students will probably like this one as it's littered with case study examples to borrow from. It calls for more localization, reassessing your product mix and thoroughly reviewing your risk exposure.

Other supply chain stuff in brief

- COVID-19 threatens driver training, supply - The Commercial Vehicle Training Association (CVTA) in the US says that each month the industry is shut down prevents 25,000 to 45,000 new drivers from entering the profession and warns of potential shortages in a few months. (Freightwaves link)
- Wallenius Wilhelmsen has laid off half of its workers in the U.S and Mexico due to plummeting vehicle sales according to the Seatrade Maritime website
- BMW is furloughing its Spartenburg SC plant in the US for at least two weeks. The 11,000 workers will continue to be paid. No decision is yet to be made when it'll reopen says Bloomberg
- London City airport is suspending all flights until further notice says airlive.net. The airport attracts primarily business travellers owing to its proximity to the two financial centres of Canary Wharf and the city of London (which is not to be confused with Greater London) and the majority of finance workers are heeding the call to stay at home.
- Canadian supply chains holding up but it's volatile says Supplypro.ca. E-commerce is on the rise as non-essential businesses remain closed in Ontario and Quebec and the prime minister encourages Canadians to stay home. Amazon Inc., the country’s largest online retailer, said Tuesday it is hiring more than 1,000 workers in Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta to handle the spike in direct-to-consumer sales. Business-to-business (B2B) deliveries are down, however, despite exceptions such as grocery store suppliers, said Marc Wulfraat, president of Montreal-based logistics consulting firm MWPVL International Inc.

Humour section

Coronavirus: Only half a store opens on Dutch/Belgian border - The Brussels Times reports that a clothing store which straddles the Dutch/Belgian country border is only half open (literally). Why - Belgium has closed all non essential stores but the Netherlands hasn't. The store has put up caution tape in the middle of the store to indicate the border. “I needed underwear, but that’s in the Belgian part of the store, so I could not get it,” a Dutch customer told VRT. (Bonus; click on the link and there's a video to back up the story).

2020.03.23 05:00 SGBotsford Child care issues in a plague year?

I recently sent this email to the minister in my province for child services. You may want to adapt it and send it to appropriate sections of your government:
Dear Minister
It's best to plan for the bad situations. Then the surprises are pleasant ones.
Current expert opinion is that up to 70% of the population will get CV at some point. Half will have a range from bad colds to severe home treated flu. 20% will need hospital care. 4.7% will need serious/critical care.
If we follow the US model of 30% case increase per day, we peak at 3% of the population getting sick each day starting in bit over a month. Cutting it back to 10-15% cuts this way back, but spreads the load.
Covid-19
  • This one is contagious enough that it is very probable that both parents will get sick at once, or will have only an incubation period between first one getting sick and second one getting sick. Who takes care of the kids?
  • Hospital stays seem to be about 3-4 weeks. For the serious ill, 8 weeks if they survive. (About half the people put on ventilators die in the first week.)
You are going to have a raft of temporarily needy kids.
If the chance of one person being in hospital is 20% the chances of two are 4%. And just coming home from hospital doesn't mean you are ready to take care of a family again.
Methods to deal with this:
A: Sibling care. In some cases the eldest child can take care of himself. In some cases he can also care for younger siblings. I'm sure this is against policy. Needs must when the Devil drives.
B: Personal community Local relatives, friends, neighbours.
C: Foster care system.
All of this happens now, but not in anything like the numbers we are about to see. It happened in 1918 too, but families were larger, and weren't as geographically dispersed. But we will see situations where the backups are sick too. And by all accounts the foster system is stretched already.
Needed:
A: Quick way for a social worker to assess if a minor is capable of caring for himself for the likely duration.
B: Method for followup (probably by phone) to check on things.
C: Method to train local people in each community to do a lot of these routine checks. (Local teachers will have good insight into children's character)
D: Quick testing to determine if kids from infected homes are currently non-symptomatic carriers. Given that lots of the support people may be grand parents who are at greater risk, you don't want to incapacitate a second set of care givers.
E: A faster way to vet foster care homes.
A, C, D, and E will be a case of 'least bad option' You will need a triage system to decide what to do per case, and a good system of checks to verify that those initial quick decisions were good one.
F: "How to be a good foster parent" needs to be online, with Zoom/Google Hangouts type group conferencing.
G: Lots of support lessons for the siblings who have just become the responsible adult in the house: How to cook dinner, how to buy groceries.
H: At some point you need to tell parents that they need to prepare: To set up alternate care for their kids if they become ill.
I: at some point you will need to start recruiting and vetting a bunch of new foster parents, possibly training existing foster parents to be a resource for all the required new ones.
The full model is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sgNIjNR8QTdiLTfSLeMHimjNcSsg2xo4PmJAVWULj8k/edit#gid=1453720544
With USA and Alberta modelled on separate tabs.
You can make a copy of it to play with.

Please note: I am sharing information about Prince George only. For more general information about COVID-19 in B.C., please see the links section further down. That's also where you can go to get information that's come out since my latest update, as this is a spare-time thing.

Northern Health has launched an virtual COVID-19 screening and information line in order to reduce demand on emergency rooms and other health services.
The service is staffed by nurses, physicians, and nurse practitioners, who are able to assess individuals who feel they may have COVID-19 or feel they have been exposed.
The line can be reached at 1-844-645-7811.
The health authority is also providing updates on Twitter and Facebook.,including word that they have set up an Emergency Operations Centre to oversee response to COVID-19 and are “taking proactive measures to maintain our stock of health care supplies and to prevent any supply disruptions.”
Elective surgeries are being postponed and visitors are being restricted.

UNBC

"Face-to-face" classes ended effective Wednesday, March 18. Campus, the library, residences and other student services remain open. The Northern B.C. Sports Centre is closed.
In a note to students, the university says, "UNBC is not closing housing and students are not being forced to leave. But, given that UNBC is actively transitioning away from face-to-face classes and exams, and with the goal of social distancing and reducing the spread of disease, we strongly encourage all students living on campus to move out of UNBC residence as soon as possible. If you have a place to go, please begin to make the appropriate arrangements to move off campus."

CNC:

Most face-to-face classes have ended. However, the school says not all on-campus instruction will end because "we recognize that not all programs, courses, labs and shops may be suited to be delivered through alternative methods; we will implement all possible safeguards to ensure the safety of students in educational activities which continue on campuses." Full statement.

COVID-19 in Prince George Facebook group

There are a lot of rumours on Facebook, but this group was initially set up to coordinate information during the B.C. Wildfire evacuations of 2017, and the moderators have committed to making sure information is vetted. You should still double-check the sources of information, especially in comments, as it’s tough to for moderators to keep up. https://www.facebook.com/groups/PrinceGeorgeFireEvacue

Prince George Airport:

"The PGAA has taken steps to reduce the risk as much as possible but want passengers to be able to make informed decisions regarding their travel. Below are several information sheets from the Public Health Authority of Canada and a summary of what YXS is doing to help reduce the risk for those going through the Prince George Airport."
As a result of new national flight restrictions, passengers are encouraged to check with their carriers in advance. The last international flight out of Prince George will be Sunday, March 22.
